Design Engineer III—Research and Development

Job Summary:
Under limited supervision from a Lead Engineer, applies independent judgment, engineering education and background knowledge to complete moderately complex to complex product design projects, meeting established cost, time and deliverable goals, while following PCB NPD procedures. Understands and can teach advanced knowledge of PCB product design (as appropriate), sensor system design (as appropriate) and application considerations (as appropriate). Significant interaction with others outside Engineering, including third parties, is required.
Qualifications:
Education: Masters of Science in Engineering, or Bachelors of Science in Mechanical
Engineering, and Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering
Special Processes: N/A.
Experience: 10+ years; Sensor Design Experience required.
Physical Demands: Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Other: Basic computer skills. Microsoft Office software, 3D modeling software
Job Duties:
- Under the direction of a Lead Engineer, uses independent judgment and creative latitude to design, develop, or modify products of advanced complexity, applying appropriate engineering principles
- Determines feasibility of complex designs, considering costs, time limitations, planning and other technical and economic factors
- Uses engineering judgment to determine and then to analyze competing product design approaches in materials and construction, many of which may involve novelty
- Significant knowledge of and experience with both mechanical and electrical design inputs
- Is a recognized expert about sensor design, test methods and calibration procedures
- Uses computer-assisted engineering software and equipment for advanced applications involving product design and analysis
- May lead small Teams in the completion of technology projects
- Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications
- Possesses an in-depth understanding of the causal relationships of product design to performance and product cost and can modify product designs accordingly
- Deep and thorough understanding of 6 Sigma methodologies such as a design (IDOV) and continuous improvement (DMAIC) tools. Willing and able to use (and teach) the tools
- Is capable of employing advanced mathematics to problems in engineering, including statistics
- Studies engineering, technical and industry publications to keep abreast of industry trends and developments in technology. May prepare and/or present technical papers and participate in industry symposia
- Follows PCB NPD procedures
- Performs other related duties as assigned
