Cable Talk: A Holiday Gift from Our Team

The importance of cabling can often be overlooked, but cables are a critical part of a measurement system. In addition to considering things like strain relief and connecting the cable to the sensor properly, the cable itself should be wound and stored properly to avoid tangles and kinks. Too much bending can not only lead to failure but also triboelectric noise.

While we’re talking about cables, don’t forget about a handy tool we offer in our rental inventory: PCB’s Cable Test Box Model 400A84. This small test box identifies cable faults for coaxial cables. It checks for continuity for shield, continuity for inner conductor, and shorted connection between shield and inner conductor, helping to ensure the cables you’re using aren’t causing hidden problems.

Renting Sensors? Wondering About Calibration?

Wondering about the calibration of rental accelerometers? How often are rental accelerometers calibrated? ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2000 states that the end user (the renter) is responsible to determine the appropriate calibration interval by considering the requirements of their own quality system. With this in mind, most rental equipment, including accelerometers, are shipped with calibration certificates that specify a “calibrated on” date, but leave the “calibration due” date blank.

When rentals are shipped, the team considers the customer’s expected return date when selecting equipment so that the calibrated on date will be within the past year when the equipment is returned. For example, if the rental period is 3 months, the last time the equipment will have been calibrated is within the past 9 months. The rental will include A2LA-accredited (in most cases), NIST-traceable calibration information.

What about the calibration frequency range? Although some sensors (for example, 393 Series seismic accelerometers) are provided with low-frequency calibrations down to 0.5 Hz, most single axis and triaxial sensor rentals include calibration from 10 Hz to upper 5% of the frequency limit of the axis.

Notes detailing the calibration included for each sensor are available on our website. NIST-traceable low-frequency calibration is available for any standard sensor at an additional charge, and additional calibration options may be available. Contact us for details.
